In its quest towards the UN sustainable development goals, Agenda 2030, the European Commission has established rules* for labeling of single-use plastic products that come into effect on July 3, 2021. Of the product concepts that Paragon Nordic offers, wet wipes are the ones affected.
What is a single-use plastic product?
The definition is a product that fully or partially consists of plastic and that has not been created, constructed, or released onto the market to be reused or refilled in line with its original purpose. One type of single-use plastic product is wet wipes, meaning pre-soaked wipes for personal hygiene or household use.
Labeling of wet wipes
The wet wipe packaging has to include the harmonized symbol for Plastic In Product (see below). If multiple units are combined at the site of selling, each individual packaging must carry the symbol. However, any packaging with an area smaller than 10 cm2 is exempted from the requirement.
The new regulation allows products placed onto the market prior to July 4, 2022, to carry the symbol in the form of a sticker. Beyond this date, it has to be part of the original labeling.
* Directive (EU) 2019/904, in accordance with the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/2151
